20.01.14: A marketing mentoring programme with acclaimed marketing expert and author Bryony Thomas is up for grabs for one of the winners of the University of Bristol’s New Enterprise Competition 2014.

Grants have already been awarded to 13 new business ideas entered by students, staff and alumni from the University of Bristol as part of the New Enterprise Competition. Now in its 13th year, it is the first time that early-stage funding and feedback has been provided as part of the competition process. This funding is designed to help entrants to put their ideas into practice to further test the viability of their idea in the real world.

However, having a great idea and an initial cash injection is just the beginning of the journey! A truly successful business needs to be armed with a killer marketing strategy and a strong, sustainable sales pipeline, if it is to become more than just a credible idea.

That’s where The Watertight Marketer, Bryony Thomas, can help. She is the author of the 5-star business book Watertight Marketing (Panoma Press, £14.99) and has pledged to offer the winner of the competition a place on her brand new 12-month marketing mentoring programme – The Marketing Masterplan.

As part of the programme, the winner will be guided step-by-step through creating a watertight marketing strategy, learning how to identify profit leaks and learn the skills needed to ensure their fledgling business embarks on an upward curve of sustainable growth.

Bryony started her own marketing journey whilst she was a student at the University of Bristol and her career highlights include securing the position of divisional Director of Marketing for FTSE 100 company, Experian, at just 28 years old, reporting directly to the Board. A role that she left in 2008 to set up on her own, offering entrepreneurial businesses 12-month marketing transformation programmes for which her business, Watertight Marketing, is now widely respected.

Dave Jarman, Head of Enterprise Education at The University of Bristol commented:

“The New Enterprise Competition has a reputation for not only celebrating excellent budding businesses and entrepreneurs, but also giving all applicants feedback, support and a chance to develop their business knowledge and networks. It’s fantastic to have our own successful alumni like Bryony supporting the next generation with their hard-won expertise and resources.”

Speaking about the competition, Bryony commented:

“When you are starting out in business, there is so much to learn. Unlike other critical business functions like accounting or legal advice, marketing is one of those areas where people often adopt a trial by error approach to finding out what works and what doesn’t. The Marketing Masterplan programme, and my whole Watertight Marketing methodology, is about equipping entrepreneurs with the marketing clarity and structure they need if they’re to meet their business ambitions.

I’m really looking forward to helping the winner develop a successful and sustainable marketing strategy that will help give their business idea the best chance of long term success.”
