Reading Time: 5 Minutes

There are some things that I find myself saying time and time again. You know you’re onto something when you see people write it down, or tweet it. So, here are the ones that pop put of my mouth so often that we’ve put them on a poster! ~ Bryony Thomas, Author | Watertight Marketing

Treating people decently is a business strategy

I first starting writing Watertight Marketing in 2010, when I coined the phrase Commercial Karma to describe how I think people should think about business. We really do believe that, in the long term, doing the right thing by your customers, employees, investors, suppliers, shareholders, and wider community, is also the right thing to do for the economic and energetic health of your business.

Effective marketing shines a light on the truth

So many see marketing as making things look better than they are, or tricking people into parting with cash. We think it’s much, much, more sustainable to actually make things good, then use marketing to show people that. After all, paying for the privilege of letting people down is actually a recipe for a poor reputation.

Functional is a milestone en route to world-class

You cannot reach perfection in isolation. You cannot reach perfection in one step. Indeed, you cannot ever really reach perfection. We support clients in iterating what they do, and encourage people to get going with putting all the key elements in place at a functional level as the first milestone. This makes money, and gets you the feedback you need, which you then take back to tweak it up from there.

Customers are like cats, they have choices

Anyone who’s seen me speak has seen my cat routine! At some point I will publish my 101 Reasons Your Customers are Like Cats book, which has been in draft since 2019. Chief amongst these, is that a cat will only stay ‘loyal’ to you for as long as you meet its needs. Stop loving and feeding it and it will simply go next door. Your customers are much the same!
